ink blotches of a student girl...

Previously I thought Jonathan Jansen (Free State University rector) was harsh & negative about education in the Eastern Cape.  I shrugged off his statements about the callous attitude of the Eastern Cape to teaching being criminal.   I suppose I didn't totally dismiss his opinion.  I respected it.  I imagined it being harsh but didn't think it was so wide spread!

A fellow class mate shared about one of her 'bad' teachers.  I was losing interest in the class discussions as the period was lagging.  I was losing interest until she said that her teacher used to hit them with a sjambok if they were late for school.  Wait! stop! right there! Am I hearing right?

Ok, for those of you who don't know what a sjambok is, it is also known as a litupa.  It is a heavy leather whip. It is traditionally made from an adult hippopotamus (or rhinoceros) hide, but is also commonly made out of plastic.  Its an effective weapon to kill snakes and ward off dogs and other attackers.

Ok now I completely understand the directness and harshness of Jonathan Jansen.  He's opinion is heard load and clear.  Accepted.  Completely respected.  Esteemed.  Understood.

It is obvious that this behaviour of a teacher is unproffessional.  Unacceptable.  Unacceptable.

I hear the call for competent teachers.  I hear the call for loving teachers.  I hear the call for responsible and interested parents/adults/educators/professionals.  I hear the call loud and clear.

How about you?

Please I urge you don't become numb to the dire state around us!
I urge you to pick a fight!

Teachers,

Pick up a micro phone!
Pick up responsibility!
Pick up punctuality!
Pick up a child!
Pick up love...

Pick up anything just not a sjambok!

Much love

Sarah
